Jannik Sinner is now convincing and without much excitement in the quarterfinals at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells. On the way there, the old master Stan Wawrinka, who was getting better and better recently, couldn't stop the South Tyrolean - for the 37-year-old, after the respectable success over Holger Rune, there was a violent bankruptcy against Jannik Sinner. Because he sometimes simply knows how to present excellent tennis in the Californian desert.

This naturally begs the question: How far can the 21-year-old go? Especially since Sinner, seven-time title holder on the ATP tour, is still waiting for a triumph at an event in the ATP Masters 1000 category. And winning the title at the ATP 500 event in Washington two years ago represents the greatest success in the Italian's young career so far. By the way, Sinner was already able to write in 2023: The 21-year-old won the first title of the season early on in Montpellier.

Sinner faces a difficult path ahead

Jannik Sinner is now up against last year's winner Taylor Fritz in Indian Wells. The only meeting between the two so far went two years ago - also in Indian Wells by the way - clearly to the American. It is the first big hurdle for Sinner on what is probably a difficult path to winning the title in the Californian desert. If the Italian wins on Thursday, it would probably go against world number two Carlos Alcaraz. Even if the Spaniard meets feared opponent Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals.

So far, Jannik Sinner has only made it through the quarterfinals at ATP Masters 1000 level - in Miami 2021 the South Tyrolean reached the final, only to admit defeat to his buddy Hubert Hurkacz. In Indian Wells, the 21-year-old is now making another attempt. The omens could well be worse.
