The break that Aslan Karatsev took after his final run in Belgrade, including a marathon win against Novak Djokovic , seems to be paying off for the Russian high-flyer of the 2021 season. Karatsev won his first ever match at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid, beating the French Ugo Humbert 7: 5 and 6: 4. The next opponent will be Diego Schwartzman, whom Karatsev certainly put in his place at the Australian Open with 6: 3, 6: 3 and 6: 3.
Another early winner on Monday in Caja Magica was John Isner. The US-American prevailed against Kitzbühel champion Miomir Kecmanovic 6: 4 and 7: 6 (6).
Later on, on the second day of the main draw, the matches of the young Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz and the German Dominik Koepfer are scheduled.
