In his second match, the world number 53, who last failed in Munich at the later finalist Jan-Lennard Struff (Warstein), meets Fernando Verdasco (Spain) or Cristian Garin (Chile / No. 16).
Koepfer is the second German in the second round of the tournament, which is endowed with 2.5 million euros. Alexander Zverev (Hamburg / No. 5) is still waiting for his opponent after a bye at the start: The 2018 tournament winner will get it on Wednesday at the earliest with either the strong Russian Karen Chatschanow or the former top 10 player Kei Nishikori (Japan) to do.
Struff had no game the day after his final defeat in Munich. The German number two, who improved by four places to 40th in the world rankings, will meet the qualifier Alexei Popyrin (Australia) in Madrid. In the event of a win, Struff could wait for a duel with the 14th placed youngster Jannik Sinner (Italy).
