With all due respect, it was not an easy few weeks that Gael Monfils looks back on. The Frenchman, who started the season brilliantly at the Australian Open in particular with a quarter-finals entry, had to pull out at short notice at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Monte Carlo after a foot injury made it impossible for him to compete in the Principality.
But now the Frenchman is back. And how. At the next Masters event, this time in the Spanish capital Madrid, things seem to be running smoothly again at Monfils: The 35-year-old made a good start in his first round duel with the Spanish wildcard Carlos Gimeno Valero, after exactly one hour Monfils already had set one with 6:3 in the pocket.
Monfils now against Djokovic
The Frenchman didn't show any weaknesses in the second round either. In the end, Monfils fixed the unchallenged 6: 3 and 6: 4 success after a little more than an hour. And can now look forward to a real cracker in round two. There "La Monf" has to deal with the Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic. Who was given a wild card in round one.
Jannik Sinner was already able to buy his ticket for the round of 32 in the early afternoon. The South Tyrolean fought a fight worth seeing with Tommy Paul, fended off three match balls and finally managed the comeback success after almost three hours in three sets. Sinner meets Australian Alex de Minaur in round two. In the evening, Dominic Thiem and Andy Murray meet in a first-round hit ( Click here for the live ticker ).
