Tennis professional Jan-Lennard Struff experienced a bitter disappointment at the clay court masters in Madrid two days after his first final on the ATP tour. The 31-year-old Warsteiner lost on Tuesday in the first round against Australian qualifier Alexei Popyrin 3: 6, 6: 7 (4). The 21-year-old now meets Jannik Sinner.

After Struff's defeat, only Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) and Dominik Koepfer (Furtwangen) are represented at the 2.5 million euro tournament from a German perspective.

It was not until Sunday that Struff was in a final at professional level for the first time in his 171th tournament participation in Munich, but lost in two sets against the Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili. As a result, the German number two improved by four places to 40th in the world rankings.
