Jan-Lennard Struff was actually out again after qualifying for the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid, as he clearly lost the final of the preliminary round against the Russian Aslan Karatsev 4: 6, 2: 6. As a lucky loser, however, the Warsteiner has already fought his way into the third round (with successes over Lorenzo Sonego and Ben Shelton) and would like to make it into the round of 16 if possible with a win over Dusan Lajovic.

In direct duels, the 33-year-old German is clearly ahead of the southern Slavs - Struff has won all three previous encounters - most recently last year at the indoor hard court tournament in Sofia (Bulgaria).
