Lucky loser Jan-Lennard Struff really made it to the quarter-finals of the Mutua Madrid Open. Since the second round, the Warsteiner put up a three-set fight after the other. Finally, the Argentinian Pedro Cachin had to believe it after 2:29 hours with 7:6 (7), 6:7 (7), 6:3. But Stefanos Tsitispas also had to go the full distance against Dominic Thiem (2nd round) and Sebastian Baez (3rd round).
In a direct comparison, the Greek only just leads 3: 2 - the only game between the two on sand so far, Struff won 6: 4, 3: 6, 6: 2 in Barcelona in 2019.
