Nobody has forgotten that Rafael Nadal's appearance at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid was the first after an injury break of several weeks. Least of all Nadal himself. But of course the Spaniard set the bar extremely high at the beginning of 2022 when, after a longer absence, he first played the preparatory tournament in Melbourne, then the Australian Open and finally, almost to sprinkle it over, the event in Acapulco won.

The first scan with the world class in Madrid was not quite as successful. Nadal could have been kicked out against David Goffin (but also won in two sets), the end then came against an unleashed Carlos Alcaraz, who a day later knocked Novak Djokovic out of the tableau. Nadal doesn't have much time to ponder these days anyway, he has already arrived in Rome, where he will start the race in third place and after a bye he will meet either John Isner or a qualifier.

Nadal has the right attitude

In Madrid, however, the 21-time major champion quickly took stock again. And it wasn't even that bad. "I've had better days, but also worse ones," said Nadal on Friday. "But it wasn't a disaster by any means. I think I approached the matches with the right attitude. I played two, two and a half, almost three hours, that's a positive result."

And further: "From now on I have to look forward with optimism and joy. We'll see what happens, but in the end things only work if you believe in them. In order to create opportunities for yourself, you have to work with the right attitude, the right mentality.”
