Carlos Alcaraz took the next step towards defending his title at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Miami. The Spaniard, who won the event in Indian Wells a few days ago, beat Dusan Lajovic 6-0 and 7-6 (5) in the third round in Miami. In the previous match, Alcaraz defeated Facundo Bagnis 6-0 and 6-2.

Next opponent will be a local hero: Tommy Paul. The Australian Open semi-finalist from early 2023 won against Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6: 3 and 7: 5.

Alcaraz has to go into a tie-break

The duel Alcaraz against Lajovic had already happened twice this season: in Buenos Aires and in Rio de Janeiro. Especially on the latter occasion, Lajovic was able to annoy the still only 19-year-old world number one. This time Alcaraz took control from the start. But in the tenth game of the second set, there was a little slack: when it came to serving the match.

And so a tiebreak had to bring the decision in the second act. Alcaraz initially found his way back into his dominant role, led 6-2 - and missed three match points in a row. The favorite used the fourth chance with a backhand win.

In further matches on Sunday, Holger Rune met Taylor Fritz, who defeated Denis Shapovalov, by beating Diego Schwartzman. And Andrey Rublev is also in the round of 16 after an unchallenged win against Miomir Kecmanovic.
