Daniil Medvedev apparently has a mission in Miami: to regain the place in the sun in the world rankings. For a good reason: The Russian has it in his own hands on the east coast and could return to number one in the ATP charts if he made it into the semi-finals. The place that the Russian had to cede to Novak Djokovic just a few days ago.
The Russian came a step closer to this goal on Monday afternoon in Miami (local time), in the third round duel with the Spaniard Pedro Martinez Medvedev never showed any weakness and finally bought his ticket for the round of 16 with 6: 3 and 6: 4 now against the winner of the duel between Jenson Brooksby and Roberto Bautista Agut.
Medvedev is only two wins away from a renewed push to number one in the ATP world rankings. If the Russian defeats Brooksby or Bautista Agut in the round of 16, Lloyd Harris or Hubert Hurkacz could wait. The Pole won the 2021 edition of the Indian Wells ATP Masters 1000 event.
