The ATP Masters 1000 event in Monte Carlo is turning out to be a great place for Alexander Zverev to herald a turnaround after the moderately successful start to the tennis year 2022. Not only does the German benefit from weakening competition, Novak Djokovic, Casper Ruud and Carlos Alcaraz have already had to say goodbye to the tournament , Zverev himself is acting slowly but surely at the usual high level. And could soon have a say in the race for first place in the world rankings.

The native of Hamburg already showed a flawless performance in round two against Federico Delbonis and reached the round of 16 in two sets. And also in the round of 16 duel with the Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta - even with a less than satisfactory first part of the season - Zverev presented himself in great gaming mood.

Zverev off to a good start

The German immediately equalized an early break in the first round and subsequently gave his Spanish opponent hardly any air to breathe: With four game wins in a row, the 24-year-old pulled away to 4: 1, after a little more than half an hour the third in the world rankings fixed him 6-2 set win.

Pablo Carreno Busta was also able to break early in the second round - and now hold it much longer than in the first set. To be more precise, up to the sixth game, when Alexander Zverev made the rebreak perfect in a real marathon game with a forehand winner after a rally worth seeing.

Zverev against Sinner or Rublev

That should finally tip the balance in favor of the German, who fixed the 6: 2 and 7: 5 success with a break at exactly the right time. In the quarter-finals, Alexander Zverev is now waiting for the winner of the clash between Jannik Sinner and Andrey Rublev ( here in the match tracker! ). Possible semi-final opponents are Tsistipas and Schwartzman.

At the opening of the day, Grigor Dimitrov (surprise win against Casper Ruud) and Taylor Fritz (two-set win over Sebastian Korda) bought their tickets for the round of eight. Before Alexander Zverev's appearance, the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas had also fixed his quarter-final duel with the Argentinian Diego Schwartzman (three-set win against Lorenzo Musetti). Tsitsipas defeated Djere in straight sets.
