A look back at better times - at least for Daniil Medvedev

Insight, it is said, is the first road to improvement. Well, Daniil Medvedev is already that far. In the run-up to the ATP Masters 1000 event in Monte Carlo, the Russian politely explained that his game simply didn't work in the conventional way on sand. "I definitely know that I have to change my game on this clay court tour," said the Russian.

Above all, this has to do with the trajectory of his shots: Because this is simply too low for the high jump on the red ashes. "I'm aware that my opponents can use these kinds of shots against me here," said Medvedev. So the insight is there.

Medvedev without anticipation

But: How much will Daniil Medvedev be able to adapt his game for clay courts? In any case, the Russian himself is dampening expectations: "I also understand that you can't suddenly change what you've been doing for nine months or even a whole year. You can't make such a drastic change," said Medvedev. "So it will be my job to find a good balance between hoping for my tennis and making a few modifications."

The fact that the hard court season has come to an end for the time being still has an effect on the Russian: "I wish we could still take part in hard court tournaments, but I understand that there are different surfaces on the tour. That's a positive thing, especially for the players who are better on clay, better on hard courts or better on grass." Anticipation for the European clay court season looks different here.
