Big disappointment for Andrey Rublev at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo: The defending champion, who had initially benefited from a bye in the principality, had to admit defeat to Australian Alexei Popyrin in the second round with 4:6 and 4:6.

For Rublev, the ultimately clear defeat against Popyrin marked the next setback in what has been a disastrous season so far. The world number six was recently eliminated twice early in the Sunshine Double in Indian Wells and Miami.

Rublev could also lose a few places in the rankings after his early defeat. Popyrin will continue after one of the biggest wins of his career in the round of 16 against Alex de Minaur, who defeated Tallon Griekspoor in three sets.
