Dominic Thiem did not receive a wildcard for the Monte Carlo main draw

Dominic Thiem had originally planned to start at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo (April 9th to 16th) in his tournament planning. But it seems as if the Austrian has to change his plans now. Because contrary to what was hoped, the 2020 US Open winner did not receive a main field wildcard for the first clay court highlight of the season. These went to Jack Draper, Stan Wawrinka, Fabio Fognini and Valentin Vacherot.

Thiem would therefore have to fight through the qualification to get into the main draw in Monte Carlo. And even for this venture he would probably have to rely on one of the four (not yet assigned) wildcards. Because from the current point of view, the world number 106 needs. more than ten cancellations in order to be part of the preliminary round.

Thiem in Madrid or Split at the start?

So it's quite possible that Thiem, who made his commitment to the Challenger event in Mauthausen (May 8th to 14th) on Tuesday, will already be on the second-highest ATP level in April. In Europe, parallel to the Monte-Carlo event, clay court tournaments will be held in Madrid and Split. However, participation in Sarasota (USA) and Leon (Mexico) seems to be out of the question.

Before that, however, Thiem will start at the ATP 250 tournament in Estoril (April 3rd to 9th). At least from Portugal there was good news for the 29-year-old: Thiem is in the main field in Estoril even without a wildcard.
