There had been 14 matches before the Thursday clash between Rafael Nadal and Grigor Dimitrov, only one had gone to the Bulgarian: 2016 on the hard court in Beijing. Nothing could be further from those conditions than a meeting on the ashes of Monte Carlo. Because Rafael Nadal rules there with a hard hand, the Spaniard has already won eleven titles in the principality. And Dimitrov was not the man who could have stopped Nadal in 2021: 6: 1 and 6: 1 after 56 minutes, that was a debacle of almost epic proportions.
Nadal was even more ungracious than in round two: He won the left-hander duel with Federico Delbonis 6-1 and 6-2. Rafael Nadal's next opponent will be the winner of the game between Andrey Rublev and Roberto Bautista-Agut.
In any case, Nadal is the big favorite for the title: Novak Djokovic surprisingly failed in the second match of the day on Court Rainier III with 4: 6 and 5: 7 to Daniel Evans.
