Stan Wawrinka is through to the second round in Monte Carlo

It was a real clay court battle for almost two and a half hours, which Stan Wawrinka and Tallon Griekspoor fought in their opening duel at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Monte Carlo. Wawrinka, who had a wild card in the main draw, let the game slip in the first section, especially towards the end of the set, and had to accept the 5:7 loss of the set.

But the old master didn't give up and managed to equalize the set with a 6:3 in the second round. From now on, the Swiss had a little upper hand, but Griekspoor nevertheless braced himself against the impending defeat and, with a score of 4:5 in the third round, had the chance to get back into the match. The three-time Grand Slam winner Wawrinka served to advance to the second round after defending against break chances.

Cameron Norrie surprisingly out

In the round of 32, Stan Wawrinka will now face eighth-seeded American Taylor Fritz, who was given a bye in round one.

Cameron Norrie, who started the season well, has already failed. The Brit never really got into the game against a strong Francisco Cerundolo and had to say goodbye to the first ATP Masters 1000 event on clay of the season after just one hour and 12 minutes with 6: 3 and 6: 4.
