With a one-year break, the touring circus of the ATP professionals will return to Monte Carlo next week. At the ATP Masters 1000 event in the Principality, almost all top players do the honors, only Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem canceled the classic clay court.

Number one in Monte Carlo will be number one in the world rankings, the Serbian Novak Djokovic. However, the industry leader caught an extremely difficult draw for the first sand thousand of the season. In round one, the Serb still has a bye, but in the second round, Jannik Sinner, the newly minted Miami finalist, could already wait. If the Serb wins, Sinner's conqueror of Florida is waiting: the Pole Hubert Hurkacz.

Djokovic in the quarterfinals against Zverev?

In the quarter-finals, Djokovic could then rematch with Alexander Zverev, whom he defeated on the way to the Australian Open title at the beginning of the year. The scheduled semi-final opponent is Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The big title contender, however, is the clay court king Rafael Nadal, who has already won eleven titles in the Principality. The Spaniard got it much easier than Novak Djokovic. After a bye in round one Adrian Mannarino could wait, in round three Grigor Dimitrov would be the planned opponent before Andrey Rublev could wait in the quarter-finals. A possible semi-final opponent would be Daniil Medvedev, number two in the world.

Zverev against Sonego or Fucsovics

Alexander Zverev also didn’t get it easy in Monte Carlo. After a bye, the German could meet one of the most formidable players of the tour, the Hungarian Marton Fucsovics, who will face Lorenzo Sonego in round one.

The defending champion in Monte Carlo is Italian Fabio Fognini, who first threw Rafael Nadal out of the tournament in the semifinals in 2019, which the Spaniard has won more than anyone else on the ATP tour. In the final, Fognini had remained victorious against the Serbian Dusan Lajovic.
