Big disappointment for Carlos Alcaraz at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal: The 19-year-old had to admit defeat to Tommy Paul in round two 7: 6 (4), 6: 7 (7) and 3: 6. In the second set, the Spaniard lost a 4-1 lead and also missed a match point in the tie-break of the second set.

While Alcaraz suffered a setback on his return to hard court, Paul undoubtedly demonstrated his great talent on Court Central in the Canadian metropolis. "I did a lot of good things today," said the American in a relatively matter-of-fact way about his victory after three hours and 20 minutes.

Ruud as a profiteer?

After Alcaraz' exit, the lower half of the tableau is now wide open. Casper Ruud, who beat Alex Molcan 7: 6 (3) and 6: 3 on Wednesday, could benefit from this. He now meets Roberto Bautista Augt, who took Jenson Brooksby out of the tournament 7:5 and 6:1.

Pablo Carreno Busta got rid of his second round hurdle with even more humor. The Spaniard defeated youngster Holger Runde 6:0 and 6:3. He will face Jannik Sinner or Adrian Mannarino in the round of 16.
