Matteo Berrettini suffered an opening defeat in Montreal

For Matteo Berrettini, the change from sand to hard court was anything but as desired: At the ATP Masters 1000 event in Montreal, the 26-year-old Italian had to give up at the start. The Roman clearly lost in two sets on Tuesday evening (CET) to Pablo Carreno Busta in a real first-round cracker.

Matteo Berrettini's 2022 season has been and will remain a rollercoaster ride so far. Great flights of fancy, such as the two back-to-back title wins in Stuttgart and in the Queen's Club, are always followed by heavy setbacks, such as the COVID-19-related end in Wimbledon - or the bitter first-round defeat at the ATP Masters 1000 event from Montreal against Carreno Busta.

Medvedev and Alcaraz top seed in Montreal

Round one was open against the Spaniard for a long time until Carreno Busta ignited the turbo in the eighth game - and Berrettini took the serve to zero. Minutes later, the Spaniard served safely to make it 6:3. The decision should be made early in the second round, and Berrettini had to take the break in his second service game. Again, Carreno Busta served himself safely to win the set and thus the match.

The Spaniard meets the winner of the clash between Fabio Fognini and Holger Rune in the round of 32. Possible round of 16 opponent is the Italian Jannik Sinner. Top seeded in Montreal, however, is the world number one Daniil Medvedev, Carlos Alcaraz is number two in the ATP Masters 1000 event.
