Of course, for tennis fans from all over the world, sport, entertainment and competition are always in the foreground. You want to experience combat, game technology, emotions and failure live - whether in person in the stadium or at least in front of the television or streaming device. It is (unfortunately) completely normal in the modern entertainment world that there is sometimes no place for the private individual who has to take a back seat to the athlete's personality.

But in small, valuable moments, the sports greats become people - with all their worries, problems and shortcomings. This is what happened on Wednesday at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal after the hit game between world number one Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios, who is currently playing well. As is tradition, after the Aussie scored the match point, he was handed a pen to scribble something nice on a plexiglass screen mounted on one of the hand-held cameras.

Father has to donate kidney to mother

It was then read: "Stay strong, mom". What is the background to this message? Kyrgios revealed his mum is currently in hospital: "It's hard not being in Australia. My mum is in hospital and my dad isn't doing very well either. People only see me win, lose, a racquet throw. They don't really understand what tasks we have to face in our private lives."

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald during the Wimbledon tournament, which saw Kyrgios progress to the final, mum Nill revealed: "My kidneys are reaching the end of their lifespan very soon." Her husband should then donate one of his two kidneys to her - the hope is high that they are compatible. In the synopsis of events, the current achievements of the 27-year-old from Canberra can be rated even higher.

Here the individual tableau from Montreal.
