It took the net to finally break in the eleventh game of the second set between Casper Ruud and Denis Shapovalov. Shapovalov had fended off eight chances in the course of the game against the Norwegian, but on the ninth attempt Shapovalov's backhand volley dripped sideways. Ruud accepted with thanks (like the last point in the tie-break of the first set) and won 7:6 (7) and 7:5. And that after he had already fended off a set ball from Shapovalov in both sets.

Casper Ruud has thus claimed the third of four semi-final places. The last one will be determined between Novak Djokovic and Félix Auger-Aliassime from around 8:30 p.m.

In the afternoon, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas had already arranged to meet again. Zverev won against Cristian Garin in two sets, as did Tsitsipas against local hero Jannik Sinner. Last week in Madrid, Zverev prevailed against the Greek, a few weeks earlier in Monte Carlo Tsitsipas had reached the final after beating the German number one.
