In the first round, Sinner fended off six set balls from Nadals: three when the score was 4: 5, three more at 5: 6. The seventh attempt led Nadal to lead the set after 69 minutes. In the second act, Sinner managed the first break to 3: 1, Nadal equalized to 4: 4. And also got the next service game from Sinner to make it into the round of 16.
However, this was not easy for Nadal either: Sinner initially fended off three match points, the second with a cheeky stop. But Nadal longline nailed the fourth into the field with his forehand. In the round of the last 16 there is a left-handed duel between Nadal and Denis Shapovalov .
Thiem, Zverev, Tsitsipas continue
In the afternoon games, in addition to Dominic Thiem (in three sets against Marton Fucsovics) and Alexander Zverev (easily against Hugo Dellien), Stefanos Tsitsipas and Aslan Karatsev were also able to assert themselves. Tsitsipas defeated Marin Cilic in two sets as did Karatsev his compatriot Daniil Medvedev, who was second.
Local hero Matteo Berrettini, last week in the final in Madrid, won against John Millman 6: 4 and 6: 2. Andrey Rublev had to struggle against Jan-Lennard Struff over three sets.
Thiem will play against Lorenzo Sonego on Thursday, Zverev will meet Kei Nishikori as in Madrid and Tsitsipas will make up for the match against Berrettini that could not take place at the Australian Open due to an injury to the Italian.
