After Daniil Medvedev's death against Roberto Bautista Agut, it was already clear before the start of the second quarter-finals for the men that there would be a new ATP Masters 1000 tournament winner after the Sunday final. After the bankruptcy of the Russian world number two, Stefanos Tsitsipas, who was number two, was the big favorite for the title.
The Greek got off to a good start in his quarter-final game against Hubert Hurkacz and won set one without any problems 6-2. In the second round, the clear trend towards fifth in the world rankings initially seemed to be confirmed: Tsitsipas made an early break to 1-0 and two games later had two chances to pull away to 3-0.
First ATP Masters 1000 semifinals for Hurkcaz
However, Hurkacz fended off both break opportunities and shortly afterwards took the serve from Tsitsipas himself. The world number 37. Acted now with much more conviction and made another break at 4: 3 after 0:40 behind. The Pole then confidently served to compensate for the sentence.
In the fifth game of the third section, history was to repeat itself: Once again Tsitsipas was 40: 0 in front on his own serve, but again it was Hurkacz who secured the game. This break should be enough for the 24-year-old: After exactly 2:20 hours of play, the Pole used his first match point to win 2: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 4 and thus secured his entry into the first ATP -Masters 1000 semifinals of his career. In this one he will face Andrey Rublev or Sebastian Korda.
