Dominic Thiem has never been really happy in Canada. In five appearances in Montreal and Toronto, the Lichtenwörther suffered as many defeats. In the second round game against Denis Shapovalov, it initially seemed as if this series would immediately be continued.

Because the Canadian got an absolute dream start and won the first seven points of the game. But the newly-won Kitzbühel winner Thiem fended off all three break opportunities and was able to destroy another chance of his 20-year-old opponent in the course of the first round.

The world ranking fourth was able to convert his first break opportunity to 5: 4. A short time later Thiem had won the first section 6: 4 - even though Shapovalov had been the better player on center court by the middle of the set.

Thiem now against Cilic
