The Kramies are back in Germany! In their first joint appearance at a home tournament since Cologne in October 2020, Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies were equally successful. With a breath of fresh air and a tournament win from Barcelona, two-time Roland-Garros champions Philipp Oswald of Austria and Mexico's Hans Hach Verdugo battled it out 6-4, 6-7(8), 10-6 at the BMW Open by American Express after an hour and 48 minutes of play.

"Every match is tight. But we also missed a few chances today. In the end we are of course happy with the start," Mies summed up after the first round meeting in Munich.

First successes after reunification

It was a special experience for the 31-year-old from Cologne in particular to be able to play in front of his home crowd again. At the beginning of last year, Mies had to undergo knee surgery and returned to the tour with different partners in August. At the beginning of 2022 there was a reunion with Krawietz. At the ATP tournament in Sydney, the two made it straight to the semifinals. A month later, at the Open 13 Provence in Marseille, it was also among the last four teams. The Franconian-Rhineland duo then achieved their fifth tournament success in the Catalan capital.

"I was extremely happy when we converted the match point last Sunday," explained Mies, who, together with his partner, was able to enjoy the traditional swim in the heated pool of the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona 1899 after the triumph.

"It was a special moment and represented our first title win together since the French Open 2020. After that I was out for almost a year. In Barcelona I was able to win more than two matches in one week for the first time since my comeback. Overall, the tournament was mentally tough, but we wanted to carry the momentum with us to Munich.”

Side square with atmosphere

The encounter at the MTTC Iphitos took place in the shadow of the center court, but in front of a great backdrop, on court 1.

"We both think Court 1 is cool," Krawietz was satisfied with the match schedule. "I've been playing here for years and every time the pitch is really full, the stands are slightly offset and people have been watching from the pitch, it's great fun. Then it's like a little witch's cauldron. We're already looking forward to tomorrow's game there and hope that the hut will be full again."

The opponents will then be Roman Jebavy from the Czech Republic and Andres Molteni from Argentina.
