Dominic Thiem has only been able to train pain-free and competition-specific for two months after his serious wrist injury. Not enough to be able to play with the big ones again at tour level. Accordingly, the results of the appearances in Marbella, Belgrade, Estoril, Madrid, Rome, Geneva and Paris were a long time coming. The Austrian would now like to put in an intensive training block in order to bring himself into shape.
Recently there had been some critical voices that attested the Lichtenwörther's lack of willingness. In an interview with ORF, coach father Wolfgang dismissed these speculations: "He's on his way back. Yes, I can guarantee that he's motivated, that he wants to do it again, but the injury was very, very, very difficult."
Unsure of starting the Challenger in Perugia
The recovery process from the injury suffered at the lawn tournament in Mallorca last year turns out to be more lengthy than the entire support staff and Thiem himself would have liked. So the further season timetable of Lower Austria remains unclear. "I can't say, will it take three weeks, will it take four more weeks. The fact is, we've now added another training block because he only started training again after he had Corona. That's only four or five weeks - and I can't catch up for a whole year in five weeks. That's not possible," Wolfgang Thiem continued.
Whether the originally planned participation in the heavily occupied ATP Challenger tournament in Perugia (Italy) will also take place remains open. Thiem is only officially registered again at the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Bastad, Sweden (July 11-17).
