Daniel Altmaier (ATP 85) successfully completed the first round of the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Pune, India. The 23-year-old from Kempen defeated local hero Prajnesh Gunneswaran (ATP 228) in straight sets 7:6 (5) and 6:2. The Indian had made it into the main field of the event, which was endowed with almost 500,000 US dollars, with a wildcard.
Altmaier, who suffered a three-set defeat against Germany's number one Alexander Zverev in the first round of the Australian Open, will face Moldova's Radu Albot (ATP 108) in the round of 16. In the only meeting between the two at the Clay Court Challenger in Braunschweig in 2017, the southern European won 4: 6, 6: 4, 7: 5.
