Lucas Miedler and Alexander Erler made it into the top 50 of the ATP doubles ranking together

It was a phenomenal performance that Austria's doubles duo Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler put on the tennis floor last week at the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Acapulco. The Tyrolean and the Lower Austrian eliminated Jamie Murray / Michael Venus in round one and Wesley Koolhof / Neil Skupski in the semi-finals, respectively, the third and top seeded pairing at the hard court event in the Mexican tourism metropolis and thus secured their second title success in a tournament of this magnitude after the home win in Vienna last year.

And the strong result is also reflected this week in the ATP double ranking, where the two Austrians are now in the top 50 together for the first time - specifically, Erler is a minimum of 13 points ahead of Miedler in 42nd place, just behind it for a year older partner from Tulln. After the current placings of the local top players in singles, a little balm on the wounds of Austrian tennis fans.

Miedler in Indian Wells with Norrie at the start

Okay, admittedly, Erler was already in the top 50 of the doubles world rankings for three weeks in November of the previous year, but it's been a year since Dominic Thiem and Oliver Marach, who made a strong impression on the ATP rankings , had to give up their respective top 50 rankings. To be more precise, that was on February 20, 2022. While the Lichtenwörther still has every chance of breaking the mark again in the future, the Styrian double world-class player has now ended his career.

So refreshing and gratifying that the ÖTV again has a really hot iron to offer in doubles - after the generation with Julian Knowle, Alexander Peya, Jürgen Melzer and Marach, an important sign for Austrian team tennis. Next week, Miedler will be chasing points in Indian Wells, but with exceptional partner Cameron Norrie from Great Britain - a joint start for the two Austrians was not possible due to the world rankings - and special exemptions for tournament winners from the previous week were in doubles not (yet) invented by the ATP.

Here is the current ATP double ranking.
