The top ten without the 20-time Grand Slam champion: For the first time in almost five years, tennis superstar Roger Federer (40) will no longer be among the ten best players in the ranking next Monday. With the entry of Poland's Hubert Hurkacz into the round of 16 of the ATP Masters in Indian Wells, the currently injured Swiss player slips to eleventh place in the new ranking.
Due to his absence in Indian Wells, Federer, most recently ninth in the world rankings, cannot defend the points of his participation in the finals from 2019. Last year, the tournament was canceled due to the pandemic.
Federer's comeback is not in sight
Most recently, Federer fell back to 17th place in January 2017 due to a knee injury. He then fought his way back and even took the lead again in early 2018. As of Monday, Hurkacz (24) will be among the top ten in the world for the first time in his career.
After his quarter-finals at Wimbledon against Hurkacz in July, Federer had an operation, it was the third operation on his right knee since 2020. He only played five tournaments this season. A specific time of his comeback is currently not foreseeable.
