Matteo Berrettini may have to play twice in Rio today

For Matteo Berrettini, his first appearance at the ATP Tour 500 tournament in Rio initially went according to plan. After an early break against local hero Thiago Monteiro, the Italian tournament favorite won the first set 6:4. However, Monteiro fought back and equalized after a balanced second round. And then the rain came, which not only delayed this game.

Berrettini finally won 6: 4, 6: 7 (6) and 6: 3, but after that only Carlos Alcaraz was allowed to bring his match against Pablo Andujar, which had been canceled on Thursday, to a successful end. Berrettini and Alcaraz meet in the quarterfinals today. If you take the two encounters in Vienna last autumn and at the Australian Open at the beginning of the year as a benchmark, a rather longer match can be expected here.

Fognini with three appearances on Saturday?

Fabio Fognini , on the other hand, was given an unexpected rest day on Friday, after his marathon success against Pablo Carreno Busta, Fognini probably needed it urgently. On the other hand, the veteran is facing a mammoth program today: First, Fognini has to play against Federico Coria in the last eight. Should he win this match, either Berrettini or Alcaraz are waiting in the semifinals. And then Fognini is also in the word with Simone Bolelli, with whom he reached the doubles semifinals.

So it's going to be very busy this Saturday in Rio. There are almost no alternatives to Monday: Because next week the next 500 will be played in Acapulco. Among others, with Matteo Berrettini as one of the co-favourites.
