Jannik Sinner's race to catch up against Grigor Dimitrov in the third set didn't deserve this end: Sinner had already fought off five match balls, and on the sixth Dimitrov spooned the ball from the defensive just behind the net. The 19-year-old South Tyrolean took measurements for the simple smash - and sank it into the net. Previously, the Dimitrov had not been able to end the match with a score of 5: 3 with his own serve.

After 2:24 hours, Dimitrov was the winner with 4: 6, 6: 4 and 6: 4. And will meet either Denis Shapovalov or Ugo Humbert in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

The Italian number one, Matteo Berrettini, had some problems in the first match on the Campo Centrale with his compatriot Stefano Travaglia. Berrettini, in Rome in the absence of Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev, Roger Federer and Daniil Medvedev in fourth place, won after exactly two hours of play with 7: 6 (5) and 7: 6 (1). Berrettini had already led with a break in the second set and, like Dimitrov, could not serve in the parallel match.

Berrettini is waiting for the winner of the game between Casper Ruud and Marin Cilic.
