ATP San Diego: Brandon Nakashima wins first career title

Brandon Nakashima has set another major milestone in his young career: the 21-year-old won his first title at ATP level at the home event in San Diego. In the final of the ATP 250 event, the American kept his nerves against compatriot Marcos Giron and won 6: 4 and 6: 4.

Nakashima had recently been able to show good performances at Grand Slam level, at the US Open the 21-year-old was in round three - where Jannik Sinner should be the final stop - in Wimbledon the American even made it into the round of 16 At Church Road, Nakashima narrowly missed out on Nick Kyrgios, the eventual finalist.

With Nakashima's triumph in San Diego, the United States is expanding its competitive position on the second tier of tennis: The United States now has 18% of all players within the top 50 of the ATP world rankings, but none of them are within the top 10. Youngest Top 50 member: Brandon Nakashima.
