Casper Ruud and the hard courts - that was a rather difficult relationship so far. With the appearances in San Diego, Ruud has now written as a tournament champion for the first time away from the ashes. And how: The Norwegian left Cameron Norrie only two games and won his fifth title of the year with an almost flawless performance. Ruud had previously been successful in Geneva, Bastad, Gstaad and Kitzbühel.
With this, Casper Ruud also took the sole lead in terms of title wins on the ATP tour. However, all of his victories came from 250cc events, while Novak Djokovic , for example, won three Grand Slam tournaments (plus the second of his home tournaments in Belgrade).

For Ruud, the success in San Diego also means another step towards the ATP final in Turin. There he will probably serve for the first time in a year-end tournament. For the defeated finalist Cameron Norrie there is still a small chance in this regard. The Brit has had a strong year and was able to defeat tournament favorite Andrey Rublev in the semi-finals.
The next test for Ruud, Norrie and the rest of the ATP circus is due in Indian Wells from Thursday. Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas also intervene there again. Casper Ruud can also be expected in the California desert.
