Zverev got off to a good start, taking his opponent's first service game straight away. Chardy, however, countered early, making three games in a row 3-2. Mainly because Zverev made some slight mistakes - and did not look completely round in his movements. The German struggled with himself and his box, while Chardy acted very concentrated.

In the fifth match of the two against each other, a tie-break had to bring the decision in the first set - and that became an instant classic. After 28 points, Alexander Zverev prevailed with 15:13.

Zverev now against Rublev

In the second round it was Chardy who took the break to 3: 2, but could not serve in the tenth game. Zverev managed the rebreak, again it was a quick decision. Diesmla did not make the favorite quite as exciting, Zverev quickly led 4: 1, used his second match point after 107 minutes of play.

The fifth-born native of Hamburg, who failed last week in Beijing in the semifinals against Stefanos Tsitsipas, will face Andrey Rublev in the round of 16, who gave John Millman no chance at 6-2 and 6-0. In the quarterfinals, Zverev could have a hit with Roger Federer.
