Again it will be nothing with the first match between Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem since the French Open 2018. Because while the German was able to prevail in a three-set thriller against Roger Federer, Thiem Matteo Berrettini from Italy had to win 6: 7 ( 8) and give 4: 6 defeated.

The first set was balanced, there was only one break chance, but Thiem could not use it. In the tie-break, the Austrian lost a 3-0 lead, initially fending off two set balls at 4: 6, but was still beaten by 8:10.

Thiem can be satisfied with a trip to Asia

In the second act the serve went up to 3: 3, then Thiem was able to equalize a 15:40, but the third chance brought Berrettini the first break of the match at all. And the Italian defended that until the end. Even if Thiem had two chances to rebreak in the very last game. In the second, Thiem wanted to take a challenge - referee Carlos Bernardes refused to take it because the Austrian, according to the Brazilian, had registered the challenge too late. As Hawkeye showed, Berretini's first serve would have been extremely tender. Berrettini will play against Alexander Zverev on Saturday, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas will contest the second semi-final.

For Dominic Thiem, Asia was still worth a visit in autumn 2019: last week, the 26-year-old won his 15th career title in Beijing, the quarter-finals from Shanghai after victories against Pablo Carreno Busta and Nikoloz Basilashvili were also a first. The Austrian number one continues from October 20th in the Wiener Stadthalle.
