He's coming back to stay a little longer: Stan Wawrinka, at the age of 36, is well aware that his highly successful career has already reached the home straight. Nevertheless, the Romand still has a lot planned and would like to sweeten his comeback, on which he has been working hard for almost a year, with a few highlights.
"I'm coming back to finish my career, but that doesn't necessarily mean within six months. I still have that fire inside me that makes me love tennis, to play it, to love the practice, to love the toughness to love," said the 36-year-old to the French daily sports newspaper "L'Equipe".
Another tournament victory would be a dream
The return to the tour should take place at the latest at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo in mid-April. It remains to be seen how long it will actually be for the Waatlander - the 2024 Olympic Games on sand in Roland Garros could in any case be a motivating long-term goal for the three-time Grand Slam champion.
"Since my knee injury almost five years ago, it has been my dream to win another ATP tournament before I retire." Wawrinka celebrated his last full success at the home tournament in Geneva in 2017. The former number three in the men's world rankings played his last competitive match in March last year in Doha. This was followed by two tedious operations on the foot.
