Stefanos Tsitsipas was one of the co-favorites in the Australian Open 2020 despite the alleged curse on the winner of the last ATP final in London. However, the Greek didn't get very far: Tsitsipas found his champion in round three - in the revitalized Milos Raonic, who didn't concede a single breakball to his opponent that day in Melbourne.
Simply reducing Raonic to its premium is unfair. The Canadian also knows how to play competently from the baseline and is happy to get on the net on (any) occasion. The fact that in Australia in the quarterfinals against Novak Djokovic was over was due to the fact that the Serb is currently playing in a different league. And as one of the few with Raonics surcharge very rarely has problems.
Raonic, Karlovic, Querrey in front with the first serve
When it comes to service overall, Raonic is ahead of the game on the ATP tour. During the 2018 and 2019 seasons, Milos Raonic won 51 matches - and in these games the win rate was the highest on the tour on both the first and second serve. In the case of the first service, there are a few of the usual suspects among the top ten of those who also won a relatively large number of points after their first serve : Ivo Karlovic, Sam Querrey, Reilly Opelka or John Isner, for example.
rank | player | odds | Total balance points |
1 | Milos Raonic | 86.15% | 1903/2209 |
2 | Ivo Karlovic | 85.13% | 1053/1237 |
3 | Sam Querrey | 84.81% | 1736/2047 |
4 | Reilly Opelka | 83.45% | 1331/1595 |
5 | John Isner | 83.42% | 3008/3606 |
6 | Jo-Wilfried Tsonga | 83.32% | 1409/1691 |
7 | Marin Cilic | 81.82% | 2461/3008 |
8th | Jan-Lennard Struff | 81.50% | 2004/2459 |
9 | Kevin Anderson | 81.34% | 2703/3323 |
10 | Feliciano Lopez | 81.30% | 1330/1636 |
Almost more interesting, however, are the evaluations of the ATP for the relationship between the matches won and the points scored on a second serve .
rank | player | odds | Total balance points |
1 | Milos Raonic | 61.78% | 826/1337 |
2 | Rafael Nadal | 61.42% | 1492/2429 |
3 | Roger Federer | 61.35% | 1578/2587 |
4 | John Isner | 60.51% | 904/1494 |
5 | Philipp Kohschreiber | 60.12% | 680/1131 |
6 | Yoshihito Nishioka | 59.25% | 410/692 |
7 | Mimor Kecmanovic | 58.82% | 370/629 |
8th | Alex de Minauer | 58.47% | 1142/1953 |
9 | Novak Djokovic | 58.41% | 1559/2669 |
10 | Juan Ignacio Londero | 58.27% | 398/683 |
In general, it can be said that if players have won matches, it has been shown during the last two years that the win rate on the first serve was 8.0 percent higher than that of defeats (76.9% to 68.9%). With regard to the second markup, the margin is even slightly larger, namely 8.7% (55.6% to 46.9%).
