Taylor Fritz has advanced to the round of 16 of the ATP Tour 500 event in Tokyo. You can actually assume that, after all Fritz has already been successful in Indian Wells this season. And an opponent in James Duckworth's price range should always be within reach for the US number one. However: Fritz was only released from the corona quarantine in a hotel in Seoul this morning. And flew straight on to Tokyo, where he defeated Duckworth 6-2, 6-7 (2) and 6-1.

The next task should also be feasible for Fritz: He meets local hero Hiroki Moriya, who only slipped into the main draw as a lucky loser.

Ruud fails at Munar

With Yoshihito Nishioka, however, the greatest hope of the Japanese had to give up on Wednesday. Nishioka came to Tokyo with the recommendation of the tournament success in Seoul, but lost to Miomir Kecmanovic 6: 2, 6: 7 (1) and 2: 6. The number one of the traditional tournament in the Japanese capital failed in the first match: Casper Ruud lost 3:6 and 3:6 to Jaume Munar.

This makes Taylor Fritz the highest-ranked player still represented in Tokyo's singles competition. Because Cameron Norrie, originally seeded in second place, had to withdraw shortly before the start of the tournament.
