Will Dominic Thiem start at the Challenger tournament in Phoenix, Arizona next week? The Austrian would have time for that.

Dominic Thiem needs matches - and wins

Yes, Dominic Thiem is still involved in doubles in Indian Wells, alongside Casper Ruud against Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic. That would be a very high hurdle for Ruud and Thiem if both played in top form individually. Under the current circumstances, however, the chances of success are quite slim. Even if Ruud entered the singles with a sovereign win against Diego Schwartzman.

Dominic Thiem, on the other hand, experienced less joyful moments against Adrian Mannarino. The Austrian number one had the game under control until the score was 6: 4 and 4: 1, then let Mannarino back into the match. And still could have grabbed the third set.

Thiem also in Miami with a wildcard

But the opening success in Buenos Aires against Alex Molcan remains the only countable result for the US Open champion of 2020. Which Thiem does not advance either in the world rankings or in terms of match practice. He doesn't have to worry about his starting eligibility for Miami, as in Indian Wells, Thiem has a wildcard available in Florida.

But there's still a whole week to go before the event starts in and around the Hard Rock Stadium. And in Phoenix, Arizona, an ATP Challenger tournament is coming up. Actually a nice opportunity for Dominic Thiem to pick up the pace again. It may only be decided at the last minute whether the 29-year-old will actually play in Phoenix. In any case, the tableau is not out yet.

Last year, Thiem appeared three times on the Challenger Tour: on his comeback in Marbella (first round defeat to Pedro Cachin), in Salzburg (he lost to Facundo Bagnis in the round of 16) and in Rennes, where Thiem made it to the final , but lost there to Ugo Humbert.
