ATP: tournament in Basel canceled again - a victim of Indian Wells?

The ATP 500 tournament in Basel will not take place in 2021 either. One reason for this could be the revised tournament calendar of the ATP.

Could the defeat against Pablo Andujar in Geneva really have been Roger Federer's last competitive match in Switzerland? That is not excluded. Because as it became known on Friday, the ATP Tour 500 tournament in Basel will not take place this autumn after the 2020 cancellation. The reason for this could be the postponement of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament from Indian Wells to autumn. Because the event will not take place until autumn this season. Probably immediately after the Asia tour and before the indoor tournaments in Vienna and in Basel. The final determination of the ATP and the WTA (Indian Wells is a combined men and women tournament) is still pending.

Although the tournament in Indian Wells is generally considered to be the fifth major, the move to the autumn has caused some organizers in Europe to frown. Stockholm immediately looked for another date, Basel will not take place now. The Erste Bank Open in the Wiener Stadthalle, which took place in 2020 despite the adverse circumstances, is also firmly on the calendar for this autumn. And will probably take place in the week after Indian Wells. Which doesn't necessarily have to be bad news. Namely, when a few aces forego the trip to the USA (as many did with Miami in the spring). And after all, only two players will fight for the title on Sunday of the finals. The rest of them could make their way to the Austrian capital.
