"I love Munich, I love this tournament," he wrote on the social network Instagram, adding: "The last few years here have not been easy for me, but I promise that I will come back next year and try everything to work together with the spectators to play successfully again."

Like last year, Zverev had already failed in his opening match. This time he lost to the Australian Christopher O'Connell in the round of 16, before that to the eventual tournament winner Holger Rune from Denmark. After his tournament wins in 2017 and 2018, he was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Among other things, he justified his failure at the beginning of the week with the self-imposed pressure.

The Munich tournament organizers meanwhile drew a positive conclusion. The MTTC Iphitos reported "sold out" on seven of the nine days of the event, tournament director Patrik Kühnen spoke of "incredibly good spectator numbers" with a view to the record 43,000 tickets sold. At the same time, he raved about the "strongest field of participants" seen in Munich so far.

Club boss Fabian Tross also announced that the organizers would apply to the ATP to raise the tournament to the 500 category. "We want to take the step, we will try," he said. This would require, among other things, an enlargement of the center court.
