It is by no means the first time that Matteo Berrettini has pinched his abdominal muscles: Last season, the Italian complained of pain in his six-pack immediately after the Australian Open, as well as at the end of the season at the ATP finals in Turin. There, the 25-year-old couldn't even finish his first group game against Alexander Zverev on home soil - a massive disappointment for the local hero.
Now the injury, which now seems chronic, has also struck at the hard court event in the Mexican coastal city. In the second round of the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Acapulco, the current world number six had to handshake prematurely with a score of 6: 4 and 1: 5 against the American Tommy Paul. The big question: what happens next for the unlucky Roman?
Not good prospects for Indian Wells and Miami
Berrettini now reported to his fans on the social network Instagram with new information: "As you may have noticed, I had to give up the tournament in Acapulco due to injury. In the coming days, I and my team will decide how I will plan my tournament based on the medical diagnoses I want to say thank you to the audience of Acapulco who have shown me great affection. What a great country."
Participation in Indian Wells and Miami should therefore shake a lot for the Wimbledon finalist of the previous year, his fans can only wait and hope. However, the southern European also took the opportunity to put his feelings about the Ukraine war into words: "It saddens me deeply to see the beginning of even more conflicts on our planet. I wish all those affected strength in these most difficult times ."
