The first tournament victory of the current season also pays off for Daniil Medvedev in terms of the world rankings: After his triumph in Los Cabos, the 26-year-old is more than 1000 points ahead of his first pursuer Alexander Zverev. Like Rafael Nadal, third in the world rankings, the German still lost points from the 2019 ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal. A preliminary decision regarding the seeding list at the US Open could be made this week in Montreal, where Medvedev has to defend 1000 points from his previous year's triumph in Toronto.

It is not yet clear whether Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic will be allowed to play in New York despite the lack of vaccination against the corona virus. In any case, it would give the draw additional appeal, as the 21-time Grand Slam winner is currently "only" sixth in the world rankings behind Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner had to give up tenth place, which Hubert Hurkacz now occupies. Mind you, in front of Cameron Norrie, who also overtook Sinner thanks to his finals in Los Cabos.

Kyrgios could be seeded at the US Open

Meanwhile, Washington champion Nick Kyrgios made a big leap forward, making up 26 places and now ranked 37th in the world rankings. So it's possible that the Australian will be one of the 32 seeded players at the US Open. In any case, for a big increase in points in Montreal, the 27-year-old would have to get Medvedev out of the way, as the Russian expects the winner of the first round duel between Kyrgios and Sebastian Baez .

Dominic Thiem, on the other hand, will not start in Canada and will only return to the tour next week at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati. In the world rankings published on Monday, the 28-year-old slipped 60 positions to 232nd place, which is also due to the points he lost (90) in the 2019 edition in Montreal. Austrian number one remains Filip Misolic on position 136, Jurij Rodionov lurks only three places behind.
