It was Dominic Thiem's declared goal: to take third place in Roger Federer's world ranking. For that he would have needed at least a semi-finals at the ATP 500 tournament in Rio de Janeiro, but the Lichtenwörther surprisingly failed in the round of the last eight on the Italian Gianluca Mager.

Thiem is still in fourth place in the world rankings, but the Austrian will reach a new career high in the coming week. Since Roger Federer cannot defend his title in Dubai due to injury , Thiem will move up to number three in the ATP charts for the first time.

There is also a long-distance battle for number one this week: The current leader Novak Djokovic needs at least a semi-final in Dubai to stay at the top - otherwise Rafael Nadal could overtake him with a tournament victory in Acapulco.

Rodionov with career high

Alexander Zverev will also be in Mexico. The German is still in seventh place in the world rankings. In any case, there were hardly any changes at the top. In the second row, Jurij Rodionov, an Austrian, can look forward to a new career high - after his victory at the Challenger Event in Morelos, the 20-year-old with position 172 is higher than ever before .

Rio champion Cristian Garin can feel like another winner last week. The Chilean climbed to 18th place in the world rankings, 23-year-olds even improved by 22 positions in the Race to London - Garin is now fourth in the fight for a ticket to the ATP finals.

The Race to London is still led by Novak Djokovic, followed by Dominic Thiem and Gael Monfils. Alexander Zverev ranks eighth between the two superstars Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
