The Hamburg player also increased in his fourth match at the Australian Open and again did not lose the set in the impressive 6: 4, 6: 4, 6: 4 against his childhood friend Andrey Rublev (Russia). "Great, I'm just happy with the way I play, things are going well," said Zverev with satisfaction.

In the round of the last eight, in which he had previously only moved to one of the four major tournaments at the French Open in Paris in 2018 and 2019, Zverev meets Stan Wawrinka. The 34-year-old Swiss, winner in Melbourne 2014, won 6: 2, 2: 6, 4: 6, 7: 6 (7: 2), 6: 2 against the number four seeded Daniil Medvedev (Russia) ,

Wawrinka has also won the French Open 2015 and the US Open 2016 and is currently number 15 in the world rankings. He has lost the two previous duels with Zverev, but these took place in 2017 and 2016. Both times it went over three sentences. "I'm playing against a former champion who is playing incredible tennis right now, but I'll be ready," said Zverev.

Youth friend Rublev seemed to be the toughest test at the Australian Open for Zverev. The 22-year-old Russian, with whom Zverev played doubles in junior tournaments for years, had won his previous 15 matches, including all 11 this year. He also won the tournaments in Doha and Auchland.

Zverev played again concentrated. Almost equally distributed on forehand, backhand and serve, he gets significantly more direct points than Rublev, currently number 16 in the world rankings. Almost as if ordered, Zverev got a break on occasion and converted his first match ball after only 1:37 hours.
