Barty beat Lesia Tsurenko, who had no chance at all, 6:0 and 6:1 and thus got off to an excellent start in her home tournament.
Barty was about to hand out a pair of glasses, at 6:0, 5:0 she already had match point, but then recklessly forgave and allowed Tsurenko the game of honor.
The world number one managed 14 winning strokes with at least 17 mistakes without need - Tsurenko, however, made 21 unforced errors with only 4 winning strokes. Tsurenko always had big problems, especially with Barty's slice.
"It felt like an eternity to be back here," Barty said during the on-court interview. "It's so nice to be playing on home soil again."
"I managed to use my forehand well today," said Barty. She now meets another qualifier, Italy's Lucia Bronzetti.
Barty vs Osaka in Round of 16?
However, Barty caught a difficult quarter in the draw, as early as the round of 16 there could be a smash against defending champion Naomi Osaka. She is currently only ranked 14th in the world, but was also in great form in her opening game: she won 6: 3, 6: 3 against Camilo Osorio .
