While the final phase of the ATP Cup had just begun in Sydney, the man who had already taken the trophy home from Melbourne six times had already hit the Rod Laver Arena: Roger Federer . The Swiss completed his first training session on January 10, making the 38-year-old one of the first players to attempt Melbourne Park this year.

Among these professionals was Maria Sharapova, who also completed her first session on January 10th. Sharapova's ex-boyfriend Grigor Dimitrov also tried early in Melbourne Park after the Bulgarians had left the ATP Cup.

Dominic Thiem, on the other hand, only started his first training session on Monday. The Austrian, who will be fifth in the Australian Open , wants to win his first Grand Slam title in Melbourne. The conditions should suit the 26-year-old, the ball jump should be higher than in previous years.

Waiting for Nadal and Djokovic

Alexander Zverev is probably not going to think too much about this at first. First and foremost, the Germans will have to get their serve under control. According to reports, the 22-year-old placed great emphasis on this in his first training session.

Matteo Berrettini and Stefanos Tsitsipas are also already in Melbourne. The two youngsters faced each other in the first round last year, a year later both the Italian and the Greek are among the eight best tennis players in the world.

Waiting for Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. The world ranking leader and his first pursuer will only train for the first time after the exhausting ATP Cup final on Tuesday, thus completing the star lineup on the training pitches, at least on the men's side.
