Australian Open hope to attract 30,000 spectators a day

In an initial plan for the Grand Slam in January 2021, the organizers of the Australian Open have envisaged an audience of 30,000 tennis fans per day. At least this is what tournament boss Craig Tiley hopes for the Melbourne Park facility on Channel 9 TV. Access should only be allowed to Australians.

Foreign fans could not be welcomed because of the international travel restrictions, said Tiley. The Australian Open is planned for January 18 to 31, 2021.

As recently at the US Open and from Sunday also at the French Open, the players should be accommodated in a so-called bubble and only be allowed to commute between the facility and the hotel. "We will learn a lot from the French Open and have already learned a lot from the US Open. We will gather all this experience in order to organize the best possible Australian Open," said Tiley.

The organizers' plans so far provide that the players come to Australia two weeks before the start of the tournament. The state of Victoria, in which Melbourne is located, has long been severely affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The situation has since improved.

Special attention is given to the players. Tennis Australia is also observing developments at the French Open. “The tournaments check mandatory tests, different levels of quarantine and a limited number of accompanying persons. Of course, we look at all of these options, and more so, as part of our planning scenario. If the conditions are better and the US Open and the French Open go well, that will boost the players' self-confidence and also help us here in Melbourne in the coming year. "
