In the end it was a tough forehand, and there was probably some relief: Medvedev beat Maxime Cressy 6: 2, 7: 6 (4), 6: 7 (4) and 7: 5 and is now in the round of last night.
The man from Russia had problems with the promoted team from the USA. Cressy brings the past back to life, plays serve-and-volley throughout, and after he had problems with the first volley in the first round, which Medvedev always put in front of his feet from a long return position, he then got into the game better and better.
Cressy increased his point gains after the first serve from 50 percent (in set 1) to 85 and 100 percent in sets two and three, while Medvedev no longer consistently delivered his returns deep. Medvedev was annoyed at times, which didn't make things any better for him. In round four he was there again on the return, but needed nine break chances to take the decisive 6:5 lead.
"He did really well," praised Medvedev afterwards. "In the first set I thought I was in control." In the fourth round, after the many missed break chances, he slowly got angry, he admitted.
Medvedev meets Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals: The Canadian turned his game against the recovered Marin Cilic and won 2: 6, 7: 6 (7), 6: 2 and 7: 6 (4).
