Naomi Osaka had the honor of opening the Australian Open 2020 at the Rod Laver Arena - and the defending champion did not disappoint. Osaka won 6: 2 and 6: 4 against Czech Marie Bouzkova and will meet Saisai Zheng in round 2.

Serena Williams, seven-time winner "Down Under" and hunting for her 24th Grand Slam title, was allowed to go to Osaka on the main square in Melbourne. Williams did not feed the doubters whether she was able to do so: With a strong 6: 0, 6: 3, the 38-year-old beat the young Russian Anastasia Potapova - Williams made only three uncommon mistakes in set 1, at 10 chalked up. She now meets Tamara Zidansek or Na-lae Han. /

Williams had won their first tournament in Auckland a week ago in three years after the Australian Open 2017 - but not against the really big competition. That Williams can be expected in Melbourne: But she has now impressively demonstrated this.

Previously, Julia Görges had already won her first round game. Petra Martic (who is now playing against Görges) and Sofia Kenin are also on.

Barbora Strycova said goodbye as the first seeded player. The 32 seeded Czech lost to Sorana Cirstea in two sets.
